McAlester has deep roots. It grew from an 1869 trading post and took its modern form in 1907, when North McAlester and South McAlester merged into one city. The median build year is around 1971, about 11.5 percent of homes were built before the 1940s, and roughly 80 percent are detached single-family houses.
